After a highly-successful debut season, the Somerville-based Los Guapos coed
soccer club started the 1997 fall season on the right foot, beating the Riders
2-1 at Bunker Hill Community College on Sunday.
The Guapos' off-season acquisition of center forward Ken Mullin paid
immediate dividends. Mullin figured in both of the Guapos' goals, scoring the
first one near the end of the opening half and setting up the game-winner in
the second. With the Guapos down 1-0, Mullin collected a feed from Frank Lis
in the left side of the goal box and blasted it in to tie it. Early in the
second half, Mullin sent a long serve down the right sideline to striker
Richard Wardle, who deposited it inside the right post for a 2-1 lead.
The Guapos were missing key defenders in Harrison Sheppard and Dwight Wyatt,
but made due with big back-line performances from Rob and Tony Garcia, Melissa
Coupe, Brenda Morris and Brian Cowan. Goaltender Chris Marcucci face just four
shots in the contest.
Up front, Mullin, Colette Chisholm, John Cunha and Simon McClusky led the
Guapos' attack. Lis, Christian Sheridan, and newly-acquired halfbacks Laura
Vogel and Suzanne Robinson were solid in the midfield.
The Guapos return to the Boston Ski and Sport League fall soccer season after
a rewarding debut last spring, in which the team finished as runner-up in the
Silver Cup championship. The Guapos play their next game at Bunker Hill on
Sunday afternoon (3:45) against Ken Maguire's club.
After a highly-successful debut season, the Somerville-based Los
Guapos coed soccer club started the 1997 fall season on the right foot,
beating the Riders 2-1 at Bunker Hill Community College on Sunday, Sept. 7.
But the euphoria didn't last long, as the team was issued its first loss this
past Sunday, a 2-1 setback to Ken Maguire's club.
In the Guapos' loss on Sunday, Wardle scored early in the second half on a
pretty give-and-go with McClusky, giving the Guapos a 1-0 lead. But Maguire's
squad tied it with 10 minutes left, and scored on a penalty shot with less
than a minute remaining to secure the victory, its second of the season.
